    GamesRadar: Will Wright Unveils Spore

Talking at the Game Developers Conference, Will Wright, creator of the hugely popular lifestyle game The Sims, has spoken briefly about Spore, his massively ambitious next project.

Spore's concept revolves around recreating biological behaviour in a digital format - that is, replicating evolution from the very beginning of the smallest organism to the largest, most complex being, right on your PC screen.

To begin with, players will take an amoeba-sized digital being and affect the development of its physical appearance by controlling how things like its limbs, jaw and other body parts evolve.

As your creature matures in line with your careful nurturing, it will develop its own unique features and, in time, will become its own unique creation, varying considerably from the creatures developed by other players.

Your being's physical appearance and intelligence changes over time so that, eventually, it is able to build cities, fight, trade and perform all manner of functions.

As the game progresses, the player is required, in an realtime strategy style, to develop and administrate a community and civilisation of creatures that, if the premise is to be believed, will feature their own unique characteristics and way of life.

Eventually, your civilisation will have developed technology to a point where it's not just possible to travel around its own planetary space, but to transcend space where it can explore and, if connected to the internet, find the planets and creations of other players.

This is where things get really interesting. What you're able to do is explore and meet new civilisations containing creatures that have developed in a different way to your own. As each player is creating and experiencing new things, it will be interesting to see how their creatures have developed.

In keeping with true human nature, it will also be possible for you to conquer other planets, wiping out other players' species and perhaps even conquer the universe by making the most of weaponry invented and armies amassed.

Players who wouldn't ordinarily play in a hostile manner may need to form defensive strategies, maybe even turning to a violent 'attack first' policy, in order to pre-empt attacks from neighbouring players. Just as warring nations have done in our own history.

It's still unclear exactly how Spore will work and how deep it will or, more to the point, can go. But it's looking to be a game about choice and discovery - endless discovery of the practically infinite worlds of other players. This could very well be the game that never ends.

If this is done properly, it's going to be huge. When we know more, we'll be sure to let you know about it. Stick with gamesradar.com - this is one we intend to watch closely.
