    GeForce 6600 GT Hanging Issue...

    First off, the system specs:

    Gigabit K8 MB w/ AMD Athlon 64 2800+
    1GB PC3200 RAM
    GeForce 6600 GT
    120 GB 7200rpm HD
    300W PSU
    Nothing is overclocked

Hello all. Maybe someone out there could offer me some assistance. A couple days ago, I picked up a new MSI GeForce 6600 GT. Fired TS2 up once to see how it worked, and everything seemed great. I only played for like 2 minutes, just to check it out.

But then yesterday I tried playing Doom 3. About 2 minutes into the game, it hung up, but resumed after about 10-15 seconds. But then a few seconds later, it froze again, and whatever sound that was playing at the time of the "freeze" was "stuck" too. So, I loaded up TS2 and played for a few minutes, and the same thing happened. Completely froze with looping sound for about 10-15 seconds. It never completely crashed, just those temporary freezes like that. Tried running 3DMark 2003, same results. System works just fine with 2d applications. I only experienced the locking up with 3d applications.

I checked all over Nvidia's forums, and it appears that many other people are experiencing this as well, with cards from different manufacturers. I tried various configurations with Riva Tune that people had mentioned, but no success. Tried disabling AGP fast-write, and tried just about every different version of the Forceware display drivers. Nothin'. I'm thinking that my weak PSU is to blame. I hear that 400 watts is a minimum these days, and I've only got 300W. But I didn't think that would cause the type of freezing I was experiencing. And I've heard that there are some temperature issues that could affect game performance as well, but the vidao card boasts a "new and improved" fan and heatsink for "advanced" cooling. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, or if you've heard of a solution to a similar problem, please let me know. Thanks, all! :D

Hmm ... sounds more like a sound problem. Seriously ... where's your sound card info. Surely it is relevant! Have you updated your drivers?

I spent today playing the Half Life 2 demo ... yawn. It wasn't as much raw fun as Doom 1 was ... (I shan't be spending cash on it that's for sure!)

Haven't tried HL2 yet. Probably will eventually. Well, I had a SB Live in my system, but I thought that might be the culprit, so I removed that and just enabled the on-board AC '97 sound, and the problem persisted. So, I'm running now with nothing in any of my PCI slots. I'll try completely disabling the sound to see what happens. And I guess it's important to note that I never experienced any of these graphical problems until I slapped the GeForce 6600 GT in my system. When it works, it's awesome. I play Doom 3 almost completely maxed out in detail and it's perfectly smooth. Until the hanging bug happens, of course. And it always does within a few minutes.

I've got the latest Forceware drivers (version 7.32something...), and I've tried almost every previous version with a clean driver sweep each time and it didn't fix the problem. I'm gonna give MSI tech support a call tomorrow, and since this seems to be a fairly common problem, hopefully they'll have a solution for me. Thanks for all the input. If ya think of hear of anything else that might work, please holla! :)

What I gave you was the latest version of Forceware.
