Good Building Tutorials? Links? Advice? Hubby bought me a book of Colonial and Southern Floorplans for Christmas! (Hubby's stock is on the rise in my book, hehehe) Anyway, I want to build Simmy homes, and I thought if they were good I'd make them available for upload. I've read MikeInside's tutorials and did a search of his message board, and learned some things. The biggest piece of information I was able to find to suit my needs was that there really is no conversion of real life square foot to Simmy Building Squares. I guess this explains why when I convert them by three the rooms are two small, and convert them by 2 they are too big. So, the question is: Anyone else out there like to build? Got any advice for me? Good links?
Good question, Kristal. The metrology of the sim universe is slightly confusing to we 'solids' who expect to find measurements that are consistent. Remember that the narrowest door in the simuniverse is one full square wide and only one sim can fit thru this opening. However remove bothe the door and the wall, leaving a one square wide gap and sims may pass each other in opposite directions. Clearly geometry is not the same for sims as it is for us. Try to imagine a universe where pi is exactly 3 .... Once you accept that it is possible to adapt human scaled plans to a sim-scaled environment. Some sim-squares (SS) are one foot/33cm others need to be two feet/66cm and yet others are three feet/1m. The challenge when transposing a human scale design to a sim scale is to balance out the conversions so as to retain as far as possible the (human) designer's original plan's proportions whilst maintaining as far as practical a simergonomic layout. The real killer, IMHO, is the almost impossible task of making the building's exterior look attractively balanced. Windows placed in the best (most aesthetic) position for the external elevations are not always in the most desirable position for the room they are illumine. Sim architecture is a compromise ... but I have nothing but admiration for anyone who successfully copies a 'real' structure.
Thanks Mirelly. I worked on it last night. I had visited MATY and got a tip: Remove the Downloads Folder to the desktop before working on the lots. That way, my custom content and hacks do not piggy back onto the file. It was much easier to upload to the exchange, also. http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/lot_detail.php?asset_id=288281&asset_type=lot&user_id=124521 Go see what you think of it.
Kristal darlin, I meant to post sooner (been meaning to post all afternoon and now it is way past tomorrow and I am moving into realms of existence hitherto only familiar to vampires and mister Pescado). I think your speedy upload was caused by a Maxis server glitch. The house is only about 300KB (ought to be around 2-4 megabytes! ) I downloaded it and it even claims to install but it won't show up in the game. Can you try and upload again. I'm looking forward to seeing it. There a few details I'll be very interested in seeing ...
Hummm. That's really strange, Mirelly. I moved a family in. I can't repackage it now, can I? I also packaged it to my computer, guess I could send you the file that way. Here's another one I just did. See what you think of it: http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/lot_detail.php?asset_id=289902&asset_type=lot&user_id=124521
