hard days work I have just noticed (my goodness I am quick) that I can talk about a hard days work. It is a few years since I had one of those. I can just remember what it was like but not too well. No-one has ever talked about their hard day at the office. I have only every had two kinds of a job. One that works the hell out of me and left me drained day after day, and the other kind where I had nothing to do all day, although I did ask for work to do. I will not tell you where these two kinds of jobs occurred. In one job we were very very busy in the winter but had nothing to do in the summer and were given tickets to go and watch an English test match. I don't suppose they do that anymore.
I take it, Josh, that you 'handle' computers all day and never do a 'hard days work'. If that is the case no doubt your hands are just like mine. When we have to bring a bit of wood home my wife carries it - I can't. Everytime I carry a bit of wood I wind up with splinters in my hands, which can be a bit painful on occasion. My hands are as soft as the average babys bottom, I believe. Mind you, I am quite young yet.
I can honestly say that the stress related to working with ones head is hardest. You can do hard physical labor 10-12 hrs a day , go home get a good nights sleep and wake refreshed in the morning ready to go again; but, dealing with poeple all day long and their various problems will stress you to death...A weeks rest won't help because you can't shut your mind off and go rest. Youare always thinking of how to solve the next crisis.
Well, I have to say that I have never had a draining job. First was as a home health aid, not too much there, second as a clerk in a convience store, at night in a quiet town, and as a clown for mcdonald's b'day parties. I did help my neighbor in her day care, but with the infants. I have been lucky and not had to work for the last 16 years, except as a wife and mother. :classic:
I applied for a job as a typist a few years ago. I received a telephone call and the caller asked me to put my daughter on the telephone. I told him that she would not have the faintest idea how to type.
I seem to "handle" computers all day, but I don;t do much physical labor. (except climbing 5 stories to pick up a memo when the elevator is out) I think I have carpal tunnel syndrome from typing and using the mouse all day.
You don't type correctly, or sit correctly. I do not have any such thing and I have been typing for 45 years, approximately. I am told that physical exercise is essential - use it or lose it - if you don't use the muscles they will waste away. Mind you, my wife's mouth muscles will never do that.
LOL Philip... Well, I'm afraid that for the past few years (won't say how many for fear of scaring the youngsters in here!!) I've been very fortunate in staying home with my children being a wife and Mom, like Alapokey...I also did that so I could home-school my kids and that is a big job, especially now as I have to teach the senior high subjects like Chemistry, Biology, etc. to them! Before that I worked in personnel and pay for the Department of National Defence (DND) dealing with the civilians that were hired on at our local military base. That was a job I enjoyed and it had enough variety and interest to keep me busy and not bored...not always common in government jobs!! Plus, I have worked at many other jobs over the years...waitress, cleaner, store clerk, etc. before I worked at the DND. I must admit though, that I get more satisfaction from how my kids are turning out and teaching them new concepts than I ever got from the many jobs I have held over the years.
I believe very strongly that posture is most important in everything anyone ever does. Look at the dancers in the musicals. Posture was the most important thing. If you are typing then make sure your feet are flat on the floor - that you used a proper typing chair - without any arms. That your back is supported and that the keyboard is at a really comfortable height. And learn to type. It is 1% theory and 99% practice - believe me. That applies no matter what the circumstances of the work happen to be. If you are working at home or at an office or whereever then the posture must be right or you will suffer later.
