Massive Explosion 6am GMT Massive explosion felt across large area of south eastern England. Oil depot in flames at Hemel Hemptstead, 35 miles north of London. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4517962.stm
Yes indeed. It got me out of bed early for once. I was listening to a talk radio station in bed just dozing and suddenly all sorts were calling in from up to 100 miles away to say they had heard a loud explosion. On TV, it looked quite frightening in the dark because it wasn't possible to see what might have caused it. One of London's airports (Luton) is only a few miles away. The area is shut down tight but it will probably take days to get the fires under control. That part of the country is incredibly densely populated and the oil depot is within a few hundred yards of the UK's main north-south highway ... which has been closed to traffic. (I doubt the cops will allow it to reopen until the fire is out ... just what London needs in the run up to the Xmas shopping season!) Now I hear people are panic buying car fuel ... :(
Thought I read they were advised not to do that. And just 2 weeks before Christmas! But many families will be grateful that there was no loss of life. Unlike the families in Nigeria where the airplane just crashed killing maybe 75 children going home for the holidays. Makes my heart ache just to think about it.
Hmm. I didn't hear the explosion. But the thing that people are taling about now is bird flu. Not scared. Not bothered. In my opinion it's just tabloids blowing things up out of proportion. That's nice coming from a future journalist!
