MPOGD: Final Reflections: GDC Wrap Up

Games Developers Conference is like the gangly kid brother of E3. Not nearly as glamorous or star-studded, almost ignored by the mainstream media and easy to overlook. It rarely plays host to the kind of blowout announcements and massive media campaigns that characterize E3, but recently that's started to change. A few years ago, it was Xbox. This year, it was Spore.

Spore is Will Wright's new game, and from the early buzz, it may be his most ambitious yet. Developed by Maxis and published by EA, Spore is a kind of ultimate Sim game. Forget controlling a city, ant farm or family. In Spore players control the evolution of a species, from primordial soup to galaxy spanning civilization. As the game progresses, the possibilities change and become more complex, as does the interface. In many ways it represents the logical conclusion of Wright's gameplay concepts. Information is scarce now, but the conference was abuzz with talk of Spore as soon as it was announced. Friday afternoon, all I heard was Spore, Spore, Spore. No dates, screens or concrete info is available yet, but look for more information soon.
