Problem with direct x9.0c compatible graphics adaptor

hi,
i need some help!
i just bought and downloaded sims stories to my laptop (i say just it took 8 hours!)
i tried to run the game and got the error message "cannot find direct x9.0c ..."
i then downloaded it from windows but am still getting the same messagewhen i try to run the game.
can anyone help?

im not fantstic at computers but i can tell you my laptop is a toshiba equium, windows xp, ati graphics card and thats about all i know.
help would be much appreciated, i really want to play the game!

Laptops are not good for running this game.

 

I am having the same problem also, and I've tried re-installing my drivers and my directx 9 and the DDI thing still says 7. I give up! Please help!
