Sims 2 for Mac - Missing Universal Control Panel

I downloaded the most recent version of Mac OS X (10.4.3) the other day and almost immediately afterwards, I began to have trouble with the Sims. When I start up the game, everything seems to be OK, however, when I try to move the mouse over the control panel, it disappears and then doesn't come back. Moreover, when I highlight a house and it's supposed to give me detail, I don't get the full picture.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix yet? I've checked both the Apple and EA sites and Apple Tech Support has no response yet.

    Your help is appreciated

I'm guessing you have the patch for Sims 2 Mac?

    You're not the only one.

Immediately after upgrading to 10.4.3 (I assumed it was just a coincidence, until I read your post, crowes) I began experiencing the same problem--invisible dialog boxes and control panels which only appear when a background animation (such as a car) passes under where they would normally be, or which can be seen temporarily while manipulating the camera view.

Unfortunately, I have no fix, nor have I found any other info on this issue; I only wanted to speak up so that you'd know it wasn't just you. I would expect to see posts on this topic start pouring in pretty soon.

I have installed the upgrade patch. In fact, I did so hoping it would solve this problem, which it didn't. I suppose I'm pissed enough to try downgrading my OS until someone smarter than me comes up with a solution. Like Apple. Right.

Well, I guess if you're the type who enjoys a challenge, this just adds a new level of diffficulty to the game. I'm not that type of person.

BTW, I'm running an iMac G5 17" 1.8Ghz, first generation. You? I ask because mine's a lemon, being a first generation, and all. I can usually blame everything on that. If yours turns out not to be a first gen iMac, then I will apologetically treat my machine to a...I dont know. A defrag and a movie, on me.

    Long post. Sorry.

I too am experiencing this annoying phenomenon...and we are not alone. Over on the Apple Forums for Mac OS X Tiger, several other people have also documented this problem since the installation of the latest upgrade. No one seems to have a fix yet - MOST disturbing!!!

    Most disturbing, indeed...

I have recently downgraded to 10.4.2 (in the process, accidentally reformatting my backup drive as well as my internal. Whoops. O, the things I do simply to be able to continue to play thee, sweet "The Sims 2").

This did, of course, work. It is, of course, the upgrade which did it, as we all now know.

I plan on hiding in my 10.4.2 cave until I feel it's safe to come out again.

I got this from Aspyr Media:

Can we get a validation on this?

    Update 10.4.3

 Unfortunately it has something to do with our graphic's card. Aspyr says:
Thank you for playing The Sims 2. Unfortunately, the OS update to
10.4.3 has created problems with users running nVidia graphics cards. We
are currently working on a fix for this issue. Please keep an eye on
our support page at http://www.aspyr.com/games.php/mac/10880/support/ for
the latest updates on this situation. We're deeply sorry for the
    inconvenience!

I guess we will have to wait or try to go back to 10.4.2

I'm guessing you are runing a nVidia card, Kiran?

Yep. Going back to 10.4.2 (or earlier) is the way, for now.

I've been trolling a few other message boards (e.g., Apple and Aspyr), and a surpising number of people--in far longer threads than this--still haven't gotten the net yet.

    For now, we wait.

So if we're still running Jaguar (I am) we should be allright? I've downloaded the patch but I haven't installed it yet.
