The day of open PC building is over *rant and geekiness factor*

Anyone with a few years of experince knows why Microsoft has suceeded and Apple tanked. PCs were an Open System, while with Macintosh, I quote the Rooster Teeth Productions video, "When you need to upgrade, you just pick it up, throw it away, and buy a new one, now THATS conveniance."

Now, with Windows Vista, behind that 3D desktop and animated windows, is DRM. Basically anyone whose purchased a 1200 dollar LCD or that new 500 dollar Nvidia GPUs been screwed over. WIthout a DRM compatible GPU and Monitor, you won't be able to run any CDs or DVDs encoded with DRM. Don't know if its karma for pirating or not, but it killst o see someone shelling out for a top of the line GPU when the hardware companies know it won't be compliant and they'll be able to push even more hardware.

What happened to our legal rights to Fair Use? We're footing the bill so that the software companies have control over OUR MP3 players and computers. I guess the MIAA and RIAA feel they haven't weaseled enough money from us already.

"PFFT! Its all BS. It will never Fly. NEXT!"

heres a clip of where it was mentioned:

As is usual MS is getting a good hammering over Vista (used to be Longhorn). I have tried not to bother reading up too much of the geeky stuff cos it gets out of date faster than hackers manage to find security flaws in Windoze OS resources :p

I am puzzled why you should be so annoyed random. Your DRM (digital right management) issue ain't nothing to squeal about. It won't affect the way you upgrade a PC (in easy stages ... one piece at a time!).

Vista is not due for release until late next year and according to this source:
New versions of Windows are always best tested out on proprietary (purpose built) systems until the the first service pack is released. XP wasn't capable of running on (or with) all the extant hardware that was in common circulation when it escaped in '01.

I am all for bashing BG's corporate fatty-cattyness but your complaint is sheer whinge, frankly. D'ya expect your hardware to last for ever?

You might as well raise the alarm that there's an awful lot of folks with expensive "new" plasma TVs that are gonna deeply pissed when they find out that their fancy techno-bling isn't compatible with HDTV ....

It just gets me that those GPU and Monitor companies are going to make it big trying to sell noncompatible hardware so when the new OS comes out, they can double their sales. And I foresee CD and DVD companies chipping into DRM so they can phase out XP and take control of a legal content owner's rights of fair use. Its just the current buisness model thats screwed up, Itunes demonstarted that when given a practical alternative way to obtain media, we'll pay legally, the current 15-20 dollar for 2 good songs and 8 medicore pieces of dung only works for the recording industry, I'm sure they benefit less from the 10 cents per songs we want.

As far as I'm concerned, Apple is the true victor here. Let's face it; WinXP was a pretty lackluster system (or at least IMHO). I think that if Microsoft wants to remain competitive in the PC market, Windows Vista had better be an impressive offering.

Let's face it... if Microsoft is going to go tick all its customers off, where do you think they'll go?

    Kristalrose Wakey-Wakey!

KR reads this thread, scratches head. All this sounds pretty important to her and her love of computers, but it all sounds like "Blah Blah Blah Microsoft, Blah Blah Apple, Blah Blah Blah." :(

Okay, let me see if I understand this. Microsoft is putting out a new type of PC that can't be built and upgraded?

Nope, just a new operating system. DRM means some incompatibilities between non DRM software and hardware....

...which is why by the middle of next year, God willing, I'll have an Apple PowerBook. Sorry, but I'm sick of Microsoft. :p

I just approved it Vc ... hope Josh doesn't tell me off :p

Note mp3's are not routinely acceptable uploads. zips are OK subject to size limits. Please zip up files for upload in future and pay attention to the upload manager form that should show the file size limits and acceptable file types for upload. :D
