userstartup.cheat help needed OK So have this line: alias ` pause "Pause" "Pause the game" It is supposed to cause the ` key (next to 123) to pause the game (instead of P ) It doesn't work! and I have no idea why. The only way I can get get ` to pause the game is by booting my PC with the US keyboard ... which is a major pain cos all the important characters are in the 'wrong' place (eg @ swaps with " .... \ is where # is supposed to be and there's no flaming at all ... why can't you ruddy Yanks speak our language proper like wot we do! Comedy aside. I really would like some advice/help with the alias implementation .... plplplplplplpeeeezzzze :cheeky:
well why dont you people "across the pond" as you say speak our wersion of english?!?! Can't you tell your computer you are using a US keyboard? mabye you could buy a US computer? can't help you much.
Wish I could help you Mirelly, but I can't get the blasted cheat file to work at all! =( American OR European aside...
LOL Slim ... at least you answered. Though I still think that we Brits are entitled to decide how the lingo should be spoke because (a) we invented it and (b) we kindly permit you lot to play at running your own affairs ...
Well I looked at that file and noticed that you could type '?' for help but er...when I tried it in the game it didn't work. So the game must only like the maxiods speak.
These alias commands supposedly only work INSIDE the console so a 1 key shortcut to a 1 key command makes about as much sense as waiting for a swallow to haul in a coconut To me it seems, that aliases put into the global startup cheat work "better somehow" than the ones put into the userstartup.cheat I'm looking further into that matter and let you know if I find anything interesting -le
Ooh! That's an interesting idea. I'll check it out myself. I never thought of the fact that they might be specific to the actual cheat console (which is what I assume you mean) ... if that is the case it all seems rather pointless.

Ooh that's an interestin ... er haven't we been here before? I'm starting to get one of those Neo/Truman type feelings ... oh hello! Who are you? OK I'll take the blue pill ... no maybe I'll try the try the red ... oooh decisions decisions!
I just realize that my post shows up twice and your answer in between a glitch in the matrix, Mr Anderson???? strange *lol* I checked a little deeper into that matter since I wanted to be sure what happened myself I own the CD version and no EP installed yet (if that actually matters) Here in the userstartup.cheat only direct cheats work (means: everything which is not called via an alias) all the aliases only work for me if I put them into the global startup cheat. make sure you give it all fields like in the example ...fields you don't want to fill in, just leave empty by typing "" and yes...to use them you'd need to open the cheat console first -le
Cool. I have no idea why your post got duplicated. Opportunity for comedy though ... and no such chance should ever be missed ... well, not if you're me it shouldn't. Points on the alias format noted. It seems like a cool way to set up one's fave cheats as single key hits. Neat! I have no idea why Maxis did not make a seperate keyboard file for UK english keyboards (I admit to having no idea what the key to the left of 123 does on a French or German keyboard!) But it is a cruel punishment to us to make it necessary to require two hands on the keyboard as well as a hand on the mouse when I want to play the game by using fast speed to zip thru some actions and still allow an instant stop when circumstances dictate. Oh heck! I could go on forever. It is a real pain in the buttocks. To get around this stupidity I have had to make my PC think it's in the USA and in consequence I too often end up typing email addresses as me"someplace.com instead of me@someplace dot etc. And all because I want to have the same basic level of control over play as I had in the original game ... excuse me while I go someplace dark and quiet and surreptitiously go into meltdown and see if I can't find out what happened to MangroveJane!
I hear you...I had to "re-train" myself from using a German Keyboard to the US layout where almost every sign is at a different spot. as for the dreaded "`' key...I simply use "p" for pause if I decide not to use the mouse that is At DOS times I used to modify the keyb tables to take care of these annoying little things under windows I just never bothered looking for them...but it's a way to adopt a keyboard layout to your personal preferences -le
