The first sim I played was as myself, with another sim down the road in the character of my girlfriend. Of course we played the life we'd like to have together ;) Apart from the few disasters like vermin infestations and stove fires! :)

The 1st family I played was the one I had created the more interesting storyline for while playing "Body Shop" and creating them. :)

There's no choice on the poll for me. :) So far I've only played the Maxis-made families in Pleasantview (and one I moved from Veronaville). I've created a Sim of myself but haven't played her yet... I'm sure I'll add her in at some point.

No choice for me either. I have mostly been playing a neighborhood I have populated with sims from my imagination. I guess I just kinda throw things together and sit back to see what happens ... ;)

No options for me either. I played several families from each senario to see what was possible. I just started my own neighborhood. I always think of a theme for a town and populate it as appropriate. I guess I generally make up my own world. I find it interesting so many recreate themselves. I've never had an urge to do that! lol I find the thing I agonize over the most is coming up with appropriate names for so many people. On the original series I would choose a category like candy bars or flowers for last names. I made all first names alliterative and absurd. Everyone's name in each home..including pets..had the same initials. I could tell at a glance what family anybody or any pet belonged to and what neighborhood I was playing. I'd have to resort to internet searches and breaking out the dictionary and encyclopedia to find names after a while! lol I haven't developed a method for the madness for this game yet! ;) I'm still trying to come up with some ideas for the community lots. It's requiring real creativity to develop more than 2 or 3 lots there. :(

None of these options really adequately fits. I throw in a grab bag of just about everything: Myself, the various characters I've played in other RPGs, the various characters of other players I've met, the other players themselves, people I just invented out of thin air, people I know, parodies of fictional characters from literature and movie (but never the actual characters themselves), Maxis's own characters, the works.

    My family.

Yes that was my first, my parents and sisters and me. I did this to try and get a feel for how personalities come across, and it's always more fun when you know who you're 'playing with'.

I am now making my entire town. Well not the ENTIRE town, we're nearly a city by NZ standards. But ya, I don't like creating random characters and seeing how they go, I prefer to create people I know and then see if their actions work out as planned.

There was no choice on the poll for me either, I created two room-mates (women). Teri & Heidi, just so I could get the 'feel' of the program. I haven't played them in a while though.
Mostly I just create imaginary people, as well. Although I have recently created my family.

I play my boyfriend and I most of the time. But I was wondering, there is only like one open lot for each town. How do you create large towns? Do you have to remove or bulldoze families that are already there?

I couldn't figure this one out either until the other night. On the lot building mode there IS an option for placing empty lots. It's a flat square icon. You can pick various sized lots and choose whether it's residential or commercial. I have no idea why I missed that but I'm glad others did, too! lol I think I'm going to have to break down and buy the sims2 book. I'm having trouble figuring out several things.

You can place empty lots, but the street grid can be pretty crowded and inefficiently packed at times, making it difficult to get a lot of spaces. Strangetown is a noteworthy offender here, being that it has basically three roads and will fill up quickly. Definitely not the neighborhood you want to start multiple dynasties in.

The second option was exactly what I did, me and my bf as I'd like to have it one day. I figured it must be safe and somewhat easy to play with two adult sims. As I almost always choose a human/fighter when I play a new rpg for the first time, it's a safe card. Me and my bf is now dead, but our grandchildren is teenagers, and will carry on the genes. I like the thought of me, spreading through the generations and the neighboorhood...*gets freaky smile*
Well, my bf and I had three sons (no girls =/) and one of them turned out to be a homosexual (it just happened, he got along very well with another sim that I made, and suddenly, he had 100 in both of those bars), so he now lives with his boyfriend in a cute, specialdesigned house I made. But the other two met a girl, and girl got pregnant. I love this family, it has a little bit of everything, but are not that freaked out.

Heh, me, I personally go with some sort of roguely stealth-oriented character, or a mage...but as a mage, I invariably have an aversion to actually using my often limited-use spells, as I am a complete and utter miser, and insist on attempting to overcome my opposition by physical force anyway, using magic only when absolutely necessary, and armed only with the crappiest equipment, because come on, a mage doesn't REALLY need equipment, I'll just save my money.... It makes for a much harder game. Fighters are way too easy.

I wasn't aware Sims spontaneously become homosexual. Maxis says that Sims, by default, prefer the opposite gender unless you actually make them flirt with their own sex, and even then, they still continue to be attracted to romance sims of the opposite gender. I don't think having 100 in both relationship bars indicates that your Sim is gay, merely that this is his bestest buddy: The friend he'd go to if he had to hide a body, because friends help you move, but real friends help you move bodies.

No, it didn't made him 'gay' automatically, as normal chatting with a sim of the opposite sex doesn't make them fall in love, you have to flirt and things like that. But he spent a lot of time with a lot of girls, chatting and flirting but he never got along very well with anyone of those. One day, he met Mikael (his bf's name) and I made them chat and chat and chat.. (queingpower) and after a very short while, they were best friends. I thought 'whatever, then' and made him flirt with Mikael and of course, they easily fell in love with each other.

The reason why I play such an easy cha when playing new rpg's is simply that I don't want any unwelcomed surprises later on in the game. I've had enough of those situations when you after 15 hours of gameplay realizes that this cha won't get very far, and you have too start it all over again. I'd rather play the game several times with different characters and with a higher difficulty each time. But that's just me :)

Yeah, I have concerns like that, too. My approach in some RPG-types, such as, say, Diablo II, has simply been one of non-commitment: Sure, you get these nice advancement points. I don't spend 'em, and just keep bludgeoning through on a more or less unupgraded character, concerned that the moment I spend the points, it'll prove worthless. Only after much research do I ever settle on anything, and I still rarely commit. It makes the game somewhat harder, and you become a better player for it.
