What's this Mess about Recolors Not Working With The EP? Over at MTS2 there is an 11-page thread about this. Things that were recolored may not work with the EP. But can be changed by changing code numbers, or taken out of your game. Like, they aren't really sure what it will do. Okay, I don't like posting my Sims because I download so much stuff that I don't remember who to credit for the eyes, hair, clothes, whatever. If I haveto go back and "recode" everything, it's going to be a major hassle. Why haven't we not talked about this here. Why would Maxis change things like this when they are supposed to me "custom-content friendly?" I'm a tad miffed, if it's true. (Not sure it is true, didn't completely read the thread over there word-by-word, I mean, it went on for 11 pages!!)
Sorry to be a party pooper, Kristal but SimPE has been coming with warnings that it is an alpha program ever since it first appeared. Besides I have seen very few object recolors that were actually worth downloading ... the only one I really want to keep is the white shower curtain (for the delux bath/shower) cos it matches all color schemes as opposed to the in game curtains that are all in shades of green plus a red one ... what's that all about? ) ... and I can't remember now where I got it from anyway ... :(
I have a TON of downloaded bedding, cribs, curtains, cabinets, and those shower curtains. I got a black piano and black microwave from SimsStuff. Yeah, you're right, every site that has recolors says something to the effect of, "Use at your own risk." I just got so sick of all green and beige furnishings!!! I just looked at the properties of my download folder. Now, most of these are clothes and genetics, but I have 2,504 files, coming up to 803 MB!!!!
I'm not buying the new EP yet. without testing cheats enabled, my game gets too slow after the third house. So I'll be happy to stick with the older recolors and avoid the whole mess.;
I had to weed out a lot of my downloads when I realized that the download folder was 3.0gb. By going through all my objects and getting rid of the ones which I'd never use (because they didn't look as nice in the game as on the webpage or because they got downloaded in a group with something I wanted), I got it down to 2.5gb. Then I went through the clothes and got rid of the ones I'd downloaded early (when people hadn't been as good at making them) and got it down to 2.3gb. I may go through the clothes again to get rid of more. It is only the objects which might be a problem when the EP comes out. RGiles said that they don't know what kind of problem it might be. It might be that they flash black or blue (like some of them already do if they are not made correctly), they might just revert to Maxis originals (which they do if you upgrade them by replacing them) or possibly they could crash some games. The ones that are made with SimPE 0.15 are not supposed to do that, but they are not making any guarentees. Maxis has given them information that was used in the updated SimPE but it's a computer program in at best a beta phase. RGiles and others have said that a tool which will allow us to do updates in batches is in the works (although I wasn't clear on whether it was being made by the modders with Maxis input, or made by Maxis. I suspect by the modders). He doesn't recommend that we do the updates ourselves at this point because of that. What is suggested (and is a good idea anyway) is to remove your download folder and either burn it to a CD or DVD or put it on the desktop until after you have the EP installed. Then you can put it back in. This isn't as important for the Homecrafter or Body Shop made things, but it is important for the objects. Then after the EP is installed, put the downloads back in (slowly is best so you can check for problems.)
It's the older recolors which are the problem. The ones which have been updated with SimPE 0.15 since 2-6 are already compatible with the game. Unless you mean that you're sticking to the old ones because you don't believe your computer could handle having the EP. If your game is running slow, too much in your download file might be part of the problem (especially at loading.)
Recolors Yeah I've been having so much trouble getting recolors to show right (some are NOT what the picture shows, others are just screwed up) that I've semi given up on them until Maxis releases an object skinning tool.
Recolors are objects that modders have used simsPE to recolor them. I have several peices! I learned about this when I stared researching how to do recolors because I want to make my own nurseries. I want a crib with Pooh Bear bedding!! :(
It seems I'm doing everything I can to put off the inevitable task of deleting and redownloading the many mb of objects I have spent the last month and a half getting. I knew it was beta... I knew something would happen, but I couldn't stop downloading...especially from TSR as I kept thinking.."it's only a matter of time before these all go pay- have to get them now!!" My plan is to go in and systematically delete every single object possible (gawd - the vast amount of artwork/paintings alone!)before undergoing the extreme tedium of redownloading as I can't be certain what exactly I have anymore. Like I said, I can't bring myself to do this yet - such a massive task! So currently I'm responding to threads relating to this frustrating occurance.
No need to re download everything. Quaxi has released the latest version of SimPe which can convert all your objects to the new version. It's a pretty long process but at least you can haunt the message boards while you do it It's recommended that you stick to recolors only, as any new texture is beyond the scope of the convert tool and best left to the object creator. Oh and Jonas I totally empathize with you. I'm a download addict as well Oh and KristalRose, I understand your frustration but to Maxis's benefit, they did work with the modder community to help us get through this "hump". That was pretty cool of them, as other companies might have just ignored the whole problem.
There's a lot of variety in ability out there. When I download, I always go through and delete the ones that are showing up as the glowing/flashing blue/black. Those aren't done right and should be removed. However, there's also some very good stuff out there. The trick is sorting through it all.
Kristalrose, did you check through the beta items under Miscellaneous on MTS2? I think that's where I got my Pooh Bear nursery set. However, I don't know if they've updated it since I got it. Yesterday I downloaded the batch fix thing. Unfortunately, it requires me to get the courage to install SimPE. I'm still trying to get through all the SimPE tutorials and the batch fix tutorial just got me more confused. (They've taken down the official one since they did a new version, so you have to go through the multiple messages about it, to find the information.)
