Will this computer work? I have a computer coming in the mail and I was wondering if someone could please check out the link and tell me if you think that it could run the sims 2 game on it. I would be very thankful for any input! Thanks very much http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3551256
I think that it will run TS2 but that it will struggle. However you have the potential of a good machine as there is an AGP slot so that you can add a reasonable graphics adapter as soon as you can afford it. For example, while not the best the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 AGP 256 MB is pretty darn good for around $100 (should be able to get it a lot cheaper to be honest but Walmart have it at 105 ... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3371500&cat=4467&type=19&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A3951%3A163385%3A4467 Make no mistake! You will not get the best out of the Sims 2 without a decent graphics card. You should also allow another 100 bucks to add at least 512MB of ram as soon as you can but I would put an video card in first.
Thank you for your reply. So, do you think it would be worth buying it then? Also, is putting these upgrades in easy or would I need a techno person???
For the price it seems to represent pretty good value. You should be aware that buying with a view to add/modify/upgrade might invalidate the seller's and maker's warranties/gurarantees. Installing upgrades inside a computer case is pretty easy if a 50yr old granny(moi) can do it. The bits can only fit in one place. The rules are simple. Go slow. Be careful not to slip and break anything. The main rule seems to be to avoid static discharge which is easy to do. Keep to wooden floors and tables, go barefoot and wear cotton jeans and a tee shirt (ah shoot! Now you why all nerds look so nerdy! )
In my opinion, you'd just might as well invest the money getting a state of the art unit to last you a few years. The amount of money you spend upgrading and the amount of headaches you get from these machines are NOT worth it, plus in the long run, you ending up spend more money on these machines than building one yourself or getting a cutting edge one from Dell.
Yeah but see it was a gift, wasn't my money. So I was curious as to whether or not I'd be able to buy the game or not. Which is why I asked do you all think it would run if I bought it? Even if it didn't run perfect, would it at least run? Then I would upgrade over time of course. But for now would it run?
Like I said before it will probably run. You might have to update a few drivers ... depends how long it has sat in a warehouse. But the game will run ... just about. (Set all graphics to lowest setting, keep families down to 4 maximum (more sims on plot slows game down). As you are getting the PC for free my advice would be to save up for the best graphics card you can afford (note that you might need to buy a new power supply to run it. Some of the best cards cost 3-400 bucks and a power supply comes in at over a 100 if you want a quiet one. You might also want to consider quieter cooling for your super dooper graphics card. I just costed you a pretty nice machine on a custom build site: Custompc.com $1,875.07 Details Gigabyte K8NS-Pro Athlon64 Socket754 DDR400 ATX B3 Mid-tower caseTU-150 w/400W PS(Black) AMD Athlon 64 3400/2.4GHz/512K/1600HT Socket 754 1GB DDR400(2 DIMMs) Integrated Serial ATA RAID Controller 80GB Serial ATA 1X80GB Serial ATA nVidia GeForce 6800GT 256MB DDRIII/TV-Out/2 DVI 52X32X52 EIDE CD-RW(Black) Creative Labs Audigy2 ZS w/1394 SB0350 LG 16x Double Layer DVD+/-RW w/software On-Board 10/100/1000 LAN Intel chipset V.92 56K Modem Microsoft Windows XP Pro Note that you don't get speakers, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and MS Works which you're not gonna use anyway. Note that the nVidia GeForce 6800GT display card costs almost as much as the whole computer that you're getting. That video card has as much memory just for the screen that your computer has for everything! As I said before the FX5200 with 256MB is a pretty good card for around $100 ...
