Here's a copy of the chat transcript from the quick 45 minute chat event we conducted at Electronic Arts while we were up there previewing The Sims 3.

[07 18 18:05:25] ManagerJosh: The biggest shock to me...
[07 18 18:05:32] ManagerJosh: 360 degree positioning of objects
[07 18 18:05:39] ManagerJosh: I was even shocked at what we could do in terms of flora
[07 18 18:05:56] ManagerJosh: it isn't simply restricted to positioning one plant or flower in an area
[07 18 18:05:58] ManagerJosh: it's a lot denser
[07 18 18:06:01] ManagerJosh: and wow
[07 18 18:06:03] ManagerJosh: plants on paths
[07 18 18:06:07] ManagerJosh: it was SIMPLY AMAZING
[07 18 18:06:20] TheSimsHub: What happens to our families if we decide to play a different family? Will they do things we won't like? Such as get a divorce when we don't want them to?
[07 18 18:06:40] ManagerJosh: Your families will continue to age and normally. Basically time does not stand still for your other families if you stop playing them.

[07 18 18:11:00] ManagerJosh: aspirations, wants, needs, and attractions are no longer part of The Sims.
[07 18 18:11:08] ManagerJosh: they've been replaced in favor of a new system called traits
[07 18 18:11:12] ManagerJosh: traits are a mixture of things
[07 18 18:11:33] ManagerJosh: from skills, to behaviors, to morals to something topical

[07 18 18:12:40] Leeeeeeeee: Can we expect ALL the house features from the sims 2 to be in the sims 3? Ceilings, all the roofs, foundations and so on...?

[07 18 18:12:53] ManagerJosh: They haven't even finished roofs yet
[07 18 18:13:01] fae: All the landscaping and architecture and decor looks wonderful to me, but the sims themselves seem odd somehow, I think shadowing or texturing on them looks unfinished or something. Are the Sims themselves finalized in their looks or is there a chance they will makeover their looks somewhat before release?
[07 18 18:13:24] ManagerJosh: As I've said before, the game hasn't even reached an alpha stage of development. Feature sets are not frozen so EA can't officially comment

[07 18 18:14:16] ManagerJosh: the CAS system is simply amazing!
[07 18 18:14:23] ManagerJosh: you can adjust the depth of the chins
[07 18 18:14:27] ManagerJosh: how big how small
[07 18 18:14:31] ManagerJosh: customize the nose entirely
[07 18 18:14:34] ManagerJosh: oh ladies
[07 18 18:14:36] ManagerJosh: you'll love this
[07 18 18:14:43] ManagerJosh: they are breaking the hair area into 4 different segments
[07 18 18:15:03] ManagerJosh: roots, base, tips, and highlights
[07 18 18:15:16] ManagerJosh: each can have a different colour (or you can even pick a colour of your choice using a palette system)
[07 18 18:15:27] SporeMasterRosana: I've seen screenshots on which Sims are cooking in Sims 3, so they do have needs and certain wants, but through these 'traits' then?

[07 18 18:15:42] ManagerJosh: traits in essence replaces wants, needs, aspirations
[07 18 18:15:45] ManagerJosh: they determine personality
[07 18 18:15:50] ManagerJosh: the type of character that person is
[07 18 18:16:06] ManagerJosh: what they're trying to do (They're being EA) is that they want to create a system where each of our Sims are totally unique
[07 18 18:16:10] ManagerJosh: unique like a snowflake
[07 18 18:16:53] ManagerJosh: The amount of customization and details are simply ASTOUNDING
[07 18 18:17:08] ManagerJosh: there are tons of neat accessories for your Sim
[07 18 18:17:11] ManagerJosh: Shoes (yes SHOES)
[07 18 18:17:13] ManagerJosh: gloves
[07 18 18:17:14] ManagerJosh: rings
[07 18 18:17:15] ManagerJosh: stockings
[07 18 18:17:17] ManagerJosh: socks
[07 18 18:17:33] ManagerJosh: we can even customize the voice through adjusting pitches and the voice samples they provide
[07 18 18:17:40] ManagerJosh: you can even set forth favorite music
[07 18 18:17:40] ManagerJosh: food
[07 18 18:18:05] ManagerJosh: and MAYBE (just maybe) even a favorite color. The devs did hint though that they may very well take this out because they could not find a purpose for it
[07 18 18:18:20] ManagerJosh: Also, the astrology signs may go away as well though they may keep it
[07 18 18:18:22] ManagerJosh: it's still uncertain
[07 18 18:18:31] ManagerJosh: Looking at the body stuff
[07 18 18:18:33] ManagerJosh: wow
[07 18 18:18:39] ManagerJosh: you can customize how much muscle your sims have
[07 18 18:18:41] ManagerJosh: or how fat they are
[07 18 18:18:43] ManagerJosh: it's amazing
[07 18 18:18:54] ManagerJosh: and even overtime you can change your sims bodyshape
[07 18 18:19:00] ManagerJosh: either making em overeat or making them work out a lot
[07 18 18:19:06] jonny159: Did any fansites get to play test the game today? If so, how did you find the game ran, any smoother than The Sims 2? Or worse?
