Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U to be Released Separately

Today’s Nintendo Direct focused solely on the highly anticipated new installment to the Super Smash Bros. series. During the stream, it was revealed that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will be released sometime during Summer 2014, while Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be released later during Winter 2014. Director Masahiro Sakurai stated that this is to maximize the amount of time to develop content for each individual title.

The stream featured many new details for both versions of the game, including new stages and items. Some new features including a “Final Destination” theme for each stage, where every available stage may appear as a simple and flat arena much like the original Final Destination stage. Online gameplay has expanded to include a ranking system known as the Global Smash Power, where players can see how they compare against other players based on completion of solo gameplay modes. While no multiplayer ranking system is planned, online matches may still be based upon each player’s skills. Also, exclusive to the 3DS version is a game mode called Smash Run, where four players run around an immense battlefield defeating enemies and collecting power-ups and items. After five minutes, the four players fight off in a standard free-for-all battle with all of their upgrades included.

With many new features revealed, fans are certain to be excited for the release of the 3DS version this summer, as well as any potential announcements during E3 in regard to the Wii U version.
