Don't be so nice to your sims! They don't need a police department until the high wealth moves in and that won't be for a while. Place a small fire department when your first fire breaks out.

Have a small residential area with an elementary school in the middle, nothing else! No other schools, no water anything except power that we'll get to.

A small way away from the res, build a block of low industrial zone, far enough away so pollution wont reach the res zone.

Add a road to link the two and build a small amount of commercial zone, they should only be linked to the main road so they should be either 2 or 3 squares long.

Add a coal power plant to your industrial zone, as far away from the res as possible!

Start the game and see what happens. Good luck!

It's very important to grow your city slowly. If you are zoning $50,000 of zones at a time theres something wrong. Also, one of the most fantastic features of SC4 is the ability to adjust funding for individual buildings. Avoid reducing funding for fire/police, but schools and hospitals should be aggressively micromanaged at the beginning of the game. Avoid watering your city until necessary.

Thanks for the tips John, and welcome to the forum! :)

I don't think the thread starter will see your reply though - he/she last visited on the day they posted this thread (it's listed on the member's profile page), January 07, and they only ever made this one post. They didn't even return to see flameback's reply the next day. Just a heads up, if the last post in the thread is a few months old, we generally leave the thread as 'dead'. The exception to this rule is the Forum Games category - we often return to those games no matter how old they are. ;)

I'll lock this thread now, but you're more than welcome to add to any recent threads, or create your own threads. :)
