my sims family my game crashes before it can start up i have tried everything i have tried file cop, removed all the skins, uninstalled and reinstalled the game. i have also tried everything on Maxis support page. maybe someone can help.
can anyone help me, and if it doesnt work again will i have to buy a new one to install the expansion packs
First of all The Original Sims - even if you bought it the first day out will work with all the expansion packs... I know because mine does. It sounds like you have a corrupt game file unless you only have The Original Sims and Living large. If you only have those 2 I would try the LL patch that solves that But it sounds like you have more expansion packs then just LL and has been okay up to now. When this starts happening about the only thing to do is a good clean install, on a very cleaned up drive. First save your skins, walls, floors, userobjects directories that are under TheSims/gamedata. Save these off to some other directory away from the Maxis directory. You will also want to save your thesims/downloads directory and any UserData directories that you have neighboorhoods in that you want to keep. Then use the uninstall option in your START >PROGRAMS>MAXIS>THE SIMS to remove the game. If you have The Sims Unleashed there is a registry cleanup program on the dick that will remove old registry settings - if not you can downoad that clean program from The Sims Site under Get Cool Stuff > Utilities. Once you have uninstalled the game and used the clean program remove the MAXIS directory and everything under in (this is why you need to save those other directories off elsewhere). Now - go to your system tools and find your Disk Defragmenter and run it on the drive Sims was on or where you will reinstall the Sims. If it says your disk needs defragging - do it and be prepared for it to take hours - it sometimes does. Then re-install the Sims - followed by the expansion packs in the order they were released (skipping any you do not have: TOS, LL, HP, HD, VAC, DELUXE, TSU. I advise rebooting between each install although its not necessary, I find it is a good safe guard. Then boot up the game and make sure everything runs well - if it still breaks - call Maxis - this would mean something is bad on a CD you ahve and they will send you a new one. Otherwise .. if it works you can do things like add back in the contents of downloads, userobjects, skins etc by just copying the content back into those directories. I would add back in only one directory at a time and run the game each time: If it works fine and then you add a neighboorhood or the skins or the walls back and then it fails again - you know you have a problem in one of those items too.
thank you rentechd i will try this in the order said except i do not have any of the expansion packs yet. when my game first crashed i defraged it but but that was before i uninstalled it. i will try it again. thanks
