How do you change a gender preference?

I have way more teen/young adult girls than boys in my hood. So towards the goal of keeping my playable population down as much as possible, I thought that instead of trying to find townie husbands for them all, I could pair a few of them up with each other.

Problem is, I think I've already set their gender preferences to boys. Is there a way to reverse this so that the girls show the lightning bolts instead of the boys?

If you repeatedly tell them to have flirt interactions with the gender you want them to have, it will eventually change them.

Also, there's a way to change them with SimPE and I believe also boolprop. However, I'm not familiar enough with either to be able to help you do it with those (which would be faster than the "flirt" method.)

I believe there's an option when you turn on boolprop and shift+click on your active sim, that says Change Gender Preference. Or maybe it's Show Gender Preference...or maybe it's both...

No, it only says show, I'm sure of it. Have you tried the potion from the witch doctor thingymabob?

It takes a while. Try calling the matchmaker and asking for same-sex dates. I like some of my sims to like both boys and girls, and that gets tricky, but it can be done.

Well, I have one young lady (Merry) who was very much "involved" with her childhood sweetheart. Then, at her sister's birthday party, she accidently kissed her best friend (Lillith Pleasant)...they were all standing together in a group, and I must have accidently clicked on Lillith instead of Christoper...

At any rate, INSTANT Hearts for Lilith and Merry - and instant fireworks between Christopher, Merry and Lillith! (Good thing Dirk Dreamer, Lillith's boyfriend, wasn't at the party!) A lot of slapping and crying! (Strangely, the party score went through the roof!)

I figured Merry was just experimenting with her sexuality, but since I was planning on her marrying Christopher (Hey - I've got a very specific breeding plan going here!) I had to work really hard to get her back into Christopher's good graces. She still pined a bit for Lillith, however.

Sent them all off to college, where Merry was taking Art Classes with Dirk Dreamer...Next thing you know, she's forgotten all about Lillith and Christopher, and fallen for Dirk!

So, my point is - it doesn't take much to change gender preferences...especially if your sims are Best Friends!

PS - Perhaps I will let Merry end up with Dirk one day, but first I need that "heir and spare" with Christopher...Should be quite the little soap opera in Pleasantville!

Maybe it depends on the sim? Xena Nova had girl and boy lovers in college and was able to switch back and forth quite easily. Her niece Piper, though, only likes girls. I tried having her flirt with a boy and she just wasn't interested, even though on the surface you'd think she'd like him (he fit her likes).

I love how complicated their little personalities can be. It makes the game that much more interesting.

Funny how this thread surfaces at such a moment. My third generation are getting into their stride and I am beginning to stir the pot. For example, I have a brother and sister going after the same target. Made an hilarious date where both siblings were trying to outdo each other in the luvvy-dovey stakes ... also some great fights but (sadly) no flaming bags of poo were forthcoming ... I guess the tart they were chasing just loved all the attention ... I'm playing her family tomorrow so I'll find out, then, how she feels about the situation but meanwhile I am engrossed in my concordance because some serious infidelities occurred in the previous generation and the family trees are little ... ahem ... complicated.

However to return from off-topic. Gender preference can be altered by consistently pushing a sim to flirt & make other romantic interaction with sims of the desired gender. Sims are not like humans. You cannot turn a straight human bean into a gay one ... but sims don't care that much one way or the other. I was trying to decide if there's a message there for society at large but, frankly, the notion just seems too silly to waste time on ....
