MaxoidVanquish - official sticky post from EA's Sims 2 BBS

This is an official sticky post (dated 5th October 07) from MaxoidVanquish on the official Sims 2 BBS (this may change/update:(

Simmers, There has been a lot of discussion about the issues with Sims 2 Bon Voyage and SecuROM. Below is a list of the most common questions our community has posted over the last few days. We hope that this will help you understand what SecuROM is and that we are working hard to correct any game issues.
For the future, we ask that you use the information in this thread as your way to resolve any issues with SecuROM. Please do not continue to clutter the boards with your theories and complaints about this application. We need to keep the boards clean so that Simmers with questions/issues with Bon Voyage can be heard.
Q: What is SecuROM?
SecuROM is an anti-piracy program that is designed to keep people from unlawfully copying software, in theory for the purpose of re-selling illegally. It's also designed to ensure that the game you are playing is a legitimate copy of the game.
EA products (The Sims 2 included) had previously been using a program called SafeDisc for copy protection up until about April of 2007. At this point EA switched to SecuROM. So far, SecuROM has been used for The Sims 2 Deluxe Edition, H&M Stuff, and Bon Voyage. We are using Version 7 of SecuROM.
SecuROM claims it is not spyware, malware, or any other kind of 'ware that would extract personal information from your PC. You can read all about what Sony says about SecuROM at their website. Three links for your reference:

Q: Is it spying on me?
SecuROM is not spyware, malware, or any other kind of 'ware that would extract personal information from your PC. This is a highly recommended product developed by Sony DADC.
Please refer to SecuROMs support page for more info:

Q: Does it cause latency in Bon Voyage?
No, SecuROM is not responsible for the latency issues in Bon Voyage. We are still looking into possible causes and potential fixes. Please make sure you have background tasks turned off before playing the game and make sure your system specs either match or are higher than those posted for Bon Voyage -

Q: If I uninstall Bon Voyage, SecuRom is still on my machine. How do I remove it?
We do not recommend removing SecuROM from your machine. It is used by other Electronic Arts games that may be installed on your machine.

Q: Now that Bon Voyage is installed on my machine, my writer program is disabled and I cant install another burning program. Did Bon Voyage or SecuRom cause this?
SecuROM does not knowingly disable ANY software including burning programs. There should be no conflict or compatibility issues between SecuROM and any burning programs. If you continue to have issues, please fill out our bug submission form so we can compile the issues and send them to Sony:

Q: I heard there will be a Bon Voyage patch out soon. When will it be released and what will it fix?
We will have a patch out early this month. We had planned to release a patch this week, however weve made some additional corrections that may fix the latency issues many Simmers are experiencing.
Note: Not all fixes will take effect on existing The Sims 2 Bon Voyage saved games. If you have an existing Lot, Sim, object, or neighborhood that does not seem to be improved by this patch, we recommend that you replace the affected object, or create either a new family, Lot or neighborhood, depending on what is affected by the bug.
Sims will no longer have the option to call vacation service NPCs after acquiring the business perk Head for Numbers which was causing a crash.
Sims will no longer have the option to Call Taxi using their cell phones if they have driven to the community lot with an ownable vehicle which was causing a crash.
Vacation shuttles will no longer return to a vacation lot without the Sim at the end of the vacation if the Sim misses the shuttle (was causing the game to hang).
Game will no longer create new vacation NPCs each time a lot is visited which was causing many issues due to character file overload.
Periodic Events Controller will no longer loop twice per hour through each neighbor which was causing extreme lag on certain machines.
Autonomous water-balloon and snowball fights have been tuned so the interaction will occur less frequently.
