Kristal regarding the rounding of numbers. I was surprised when you said that you had rounded down. Usually rounding is done up as well as down (<0.5 rounds down; >0.5 rounds up). For the sims I would tend to regard a square as 1.5 feet for sizing rooms in terms of intended furniture, traffic patterns and family usage ... and only use the 3 foot gauge for laying out very large (sparsely furnished) rooms that might otherwise look imbalanced or empty.
