Hackers Strike Electronic Arts; Steals Customer Data

Electronic Arts recently disclosed on its website that it suffered a cyber attack within its Bioware Division, leading to the leakage of user data from its Neverwinter Nights Community.

It confirmed that one of its servers was the “target of a highly sophisticated and unlawful cyber attack”. While no credit card data was compromised from its servers, their investigation has turned up other information that was compromised, including:

  • username
  • encrypted passwords
  • email addresses
  • mailing addresses
  • names
  • phone numbers
  • CD Keys
  • birth dates associated with accounts on the server system.

If your account was linked to an EA account, the scope expands further including:

  • name
  • mailing address
  • billing address
  • language
  • game entitlements
  • games played
  • other specific account information depending on your use of EA account.

Interesting enough, stored within their servers are unencrypted passwords stored on their system. EA has reset login passwords for all its customers and implemented a series of additional security controls to prevent this from happening.

Customers who have been affected are advised by us to change ALL passwords and email addresses with associated to a compromised email account used at the Neverwinter Night community. Should you be using a single email account to manage your life, be extra vigilant as hackers may have very well accessed your email account.
